Catly Developer Denies Use of Generative AI, Blockchain, and NFTs in Upcoming Game

Posted on December 17, 2024 By

Introduction to Catly

The excitement surrounding the recently announced virtual pet simulator, Catly, has been met with controversy. Following its trailer debut at The Game Awards, the game’s developer, SuperAuthenti, has taken a firm stance against allegations that generative AI was used in its creation. In a detailed statement, the developer clarified that both the trailer and the game are free from generative AI technology, as well as any connection to blockchain or NFT systems.

Clarifications from SuperAuthenti

In a communication with IGN, a PR representative for SuperAuthenti expressed surprise at the speculations about the game’s production. The representative emphasized, “We do not think there are any existing AI tools that can produce a video like that,” reinforcing the sentiment shared by industry experts regarding the current limitations of AI in video production.

To further substantiate their claims, the representative provided an in-progress version of the trailer that displayed behind-the-scenes footage alongside the final cut, which confirmed that no AI tools were employed in the trailer’s creation.

No Blockchain or NFTs Involved

In addition to the clarifications about generative AI, SuperAuthenti firmly stated that Catly does not incorporate any blockchain technology. The spokesperson declared, “Our company/project has never issued any blockchain currency and any NFTs,” reiterating that the studio has no ties to these digital assets.

The development team has chosen to focus on creating an immersive experience within the game, which is being built using Unreal Engine 5, allowing for advanced graphics and hyperrealistic visuals. The team employs a variety of software to achieve detailed textures, particularly for fur and hair, further distancing their work from AI-generated alternatives.

Concerns Raised by the Community

Despite the developer’s reassurances, skepticism remains within the gaming community. The trailer showcased stunning visuals of hyperrealistic cats with vibrant fur interacting in a whimsical environment, which many noted resembled styles commonly associated with AI-generated art. Critics have pointed out that while the trailer itself may be authentic, certain promotional materials have raised eyebrows due to awkward details reminiscent of AI artifacting, such as peculiar cat features and strange text in the background of images.

Promotional Materials Under Scrutiny

The game’s Steam description, which awkwardly lists various elements including “Beautiful Cats,” “Hyperrealism,” and “Fashion,” has also drawn criticism for its unclear messaging. Additionally, promotional images that have since been removed from the Catly website have fueled speculation about their authenticity.

Although SuperAuthenti has clarified that no generative AI was used for the trailer or the game, they have yet to address the concerns regarding promotional images and descriptions.

Web3 Speculations and Industry Context

Further complicating the narrative, some have looked into the background of Kevin Yeung, a co-founder of SuperAuthenti, who has ties to blockchain gaming. The game’s promotional materials also feature endorsements from industry figures with connections to the web3 space, sparking speculation about potential blockchain integration. However, Ben Brode, a prominent game designer, has publicly stated he has not encountered any information suggesting such involvement in Catly.

As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent in the gaming industry, distinguishing between AI-generated content and human-created work may become more challenging. With major companies like Activision and EA embracing AI in various capacities, the landscape is shifting rapidly.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

While SuperAuthenti has made strong assertions regarding the absence of generative AI in Catly’s production, the ongoing discussions about the game’s promotional strategy and potential connections to blockchain technology remain unresolved. As gamers await the game’s release in 2025, the uncertainty surrounding these elements adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming title.

For now, the community will continue to analyze and debate the authenticity of Catly’s promotional materials, leaving many eager for further information as the game’s launch approaches.
