Mouthwashing: A Deep Dive into Responsibility and Human Flaws

As my wife and I prepare to welcome our first child into the world, I’ve spent countless hours grappling with profound themes such as leadership, responsibility, and trust. The introspection has led me to question my own character and ponder how I can raise a human being without passing down my less admirable traits. In this emotionally charged state, I encountered the game *Mouthwashing*, which challenged me in ways I never anticipated.

An Interactive Journey through Horror

At its core, *Mouthwashing* is a mechanically simple experience. Players interact with various characters, collect items, and explore the confines of a spaceship. However, the game leverages interactivity to tell a story that could never be conveyed as effectively through film or television. The emotional weight of the narrative often feels like a burden, compelling me to press on with thoughts like, “Please don’t make me do this.” Yet, the drive to unravel the ship’s mysteries kept me engaged.

The Premise: A Stranded Crew

The game’s premise is straightforward yet haunting: A group of individuals aboard the long-haul space freighter, the Tulpar, grapples with the aftermath of a catastrophic event. The narrative shifts through various timelines over the course of a year, and revealing too much would spoil the experience. What I can share is that the game expertly evokes dread, offers deep character exploration, and delves into themes of body horror—all within a runtime of two to three hours.

A Surreal Visual and Auditory Style

*Mouthwashing* employs a PS1-inspired visual aesthetic that adds to its surreal tone. The characters are human yet possess an uncanny quality that makes them feel alien. This clever design choice mirrors how we sometimes view people merely as tools, neglecting their humanity. Hyper-realistic or overly stylized graphics would have detracted from the unsettling atmosphere. The sound design, with its muffled voice acting, further enhances the feeling of navigating through a fog where danger lurks just out of sight.

Navigating Time and Tension

The game’s structure is disorienting, as it oscillates between moments before and after the disaster. However, the narrative remains coherent. Dreamlike sequences introduce seemingly mundane tasks, such as opening doors or mixing drinks, yet they are imbued with an undercurrent of menace. This duality reflects how real-life evil often masquerades as normalcy, making the player constantly aware of potential threats hidden in plain sight.

Confronting Disturbing Characters

As the story unfolds, the game introduces players to morally reprehensible characters, forcing them to confront their own discomfort. One character, in particular, elicited such a strong visceral reaction that I found myself reflecting on the unsettling truth that people like this exist in reality. It’s a haunting experience to resonate with characters you despise, illuminating the damage caused by individuals who evade self-examination.

A Unique Narrative Experience

Despite the extreme behaviors of its characters, the dialogue remains grounded and relatable. While there are moments of auditory and visual excess, they serve to accentuate pivotal story beats rather than distract. One such moment cleverly ties back to the game’s title, “Mouthwashing,” and darkens the narrative’s tone significantly.

Uneven Transitions and Gameplay Mechanics

While the game excels in its storytelling and dialogue, the transitions into action-oriented segments can feel jarring. Brief encounters with survival horror elements or first-person shooting mechanics introduce frustration due to imprecise controls. Though these sections seem intentionally designed to evoke discomfort, they momentarily detract from the immersive narrative experience. Fortunately, these interludes are short-lived, allowing players to return to the story without lasting damage to their enjoyment.

A Cautionary Tale for the Sensitive

*Mouthwashing* is not for the faint-hearted, especially for those who are easily unsettled by themes surrounding bodily autonomy. It offers an unflinching look at deeply flawed characters, scrutinizing their actions and motivations with unrelenting clarity.

A Reflection on Parenthood

As I await the birth of my daughter, a mixture of excitement and anxiety fills my mind. *Mouthwashing* has forced me to confront my fears, asking poignant questions about who I am in my darkest moments and whether that person is capable of raising a child. Few games have resonated with me so profoundly, but that’s the hallmark of impactful art—it holds up a mirror to our souls. My hope is that I can embrace the reflection staring back at me.
