A New Era for WWE Gaming
Since its remarkable reinvention in 2022, the WWE 2K franchise has been on a continuous journey of improvement and innovation. WWE 2K25 is no exception, promising a range of exciting features that fans are eager to explore. Among the notable additions are “The Island,” an all-new online interactive world, a revamped storyline, an updated general manager and Universe mode, and a thrilling new match type called Bloodline Rules. However, while these enhancements sound enticing, my recent hands-on preview focused primarily on the existing core gameplay and the newly adjusted Showcase Mode, which shines a spotlight on The Bloodline stable.
Showcase Mode: A Tribute to Wrestling Legacy
WWE 2K25’s Showcase Mode is dedicated to the illustrious history of the Anoa’i family, prominently featuring modern-day stars like Roman Reigns and The Bloodline, alongside legends such as The Wild Samoans, Yokozuna, and the iconic Rock. This year, players can engage in three distinct types of matches: those that recreate historical events, those that allow players to create new narratives, and the most intriguing option—matches where players can alter history.
During my preview, I had the opportunity to recreate Nia Jax’s Queen of the Ring victory from 2024, set up a dream match between The Wild Samoans and The Dudley Boyz, and even change the outcome of the memorable Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins matchup from the 2022 Royal Rumble. Each experience offered a unique and enjoyable perspective for die-hard WWE fans, marking a significant improvement over last year’s Showcase Mode.
Improvements and Challenges in Showcase Mode
The previous installments, WWE 2K24 and WWE 2K23, faced criticism for their reliance on lengthy real-life footage, a feature dubbed “Slingshot” by developer Visual Concepts. In my earlier critiques, I expressed a desire for a more immersive experience that allowed for direct gameplay instead of passive viewing. Fortunately, WWE 2K25 makes strides in this area. The reliance on cutaway footage has been significantly reduced, with key moments now recreated in-engine through smooth animations. This change enhances the overall experience, allowing players to enjoy iconic moments in stunning graphics without lengthy interruptions.
Despite these advancements, some concerns remain. In one match, I found myself stripped of control during a crucial moment, rendering me a mere observer as the match concluded. Ideally, I would have preferred to maintain control during these pivotal instances to relive them through my gameplay choices.
Refined Gameplay Mechanics
WWE 2K25 retains the core gameplay mechanics familiar to fans but introduces some minor enhancements. A notable revival is the chain wrestling mechanic, which was sacrificed during the engine overhaul in WWE 2K22. Now, players can engage in a mini-game at the start of matches, allowing them to gain an upper hand through strategic decisions. This feature, alongside returning elements like the submission mini-game, enriches the gameplay experience. Fortunately, players have the option to disable any mechanics they find less appealing.
One of the most exciting gameplay features is the enhanced weapon-throwing mechanic, which adds depth to backstage brawls. The demo showcased various new environments, including the WWE archives, where players can utilize a plethora of items as weapons. From apples to megaphones, the options are plentiful, allowing for creative and entertaining gameplay moments.
Game-Changing Features: Intergender Matches and Underground Mode
WWE 2K25 introduces a groundbreaking feature: intergender matches. For the first time in the series, players can pit male and female wrestlers against each other, expanding the possibilities for matchups. This feature, combined with an extensive roster of over 300 wrestlers, opens the door to countless exciting scenarios.
Additionally, I had a chance to experience the brand-new match type called Underground. This unique exhibition match takes place in a Fight Club-like environment, surrounded by lumberjacks and free from the constraints of ropes. This fresh concept promises to add an exciting dynamic to the gameplay, and I look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks.
A Step Forward for the Franchise
While WWE 2K25 builds upon the established foundation of its predecessor, it incorporates enough new features and refinements to keep things fresh and engaging. Although the overall gameplay remains consistent, the incremental improvements and exciting new additions indicate a positive direction for the series. As fans eagerly await the full release, it remains to be seen how the larger changes and new modes will impact the overall experience, but my initial impressions are optimistic.
